Chris Fielding
Platforms, glitter, posing and make-up aren’t the first words that spring to mind when you think of your typical broker. But for glam-rocker/broker Chris Fielding, who heads up 70s tribute band The Grimleys, it’s a great way to let off steam. When not appearing as Bowie, Bolan or the Bay City Rollers, Chris is the high-net-worth manager for The Bateman Group, where he is primarily concerned with securing new business. “I’m a people person,” he says. “I’d be a hopeless accountant!”Why insurance?
I’ve been in the industry for nearly 20 years now and, like many people, I just fell into it after completing my A-levels. But it’s been good for me – I like using my personality to sell a policy. There are negatives, of course – recent FSA compliance requirements have added two or three times the admin to each policy, for example.
How has the industry changed since you’ve
been a broker?
The onset of direct insurers’ advertising means that people are much more aware of cheaper policies. Many customers now focus just on the cost of their policy, rather than examining the details.
It is refreshing selling to a niche market at Bateman’s because the clients aren’t so focused on the cost and are more concerned with the actual policy.
How do you see the
industry developing?
I don’t think that brokers can continue to try to compete with direct insurers on price – they need to find a unique selling point in their products. For example, high-net-worth customers will always want to use a broker, so the personal service aspect is very important.
What has been your key career moment?
Joining Bateman’s two years ago. By getting out and visiting people, it has made my job
a lot more interesting and renewed my enthusiasm.
Outside of work, what makes
you happy?
I collect rare 70s and 80s records. I’m also the lead singer in a glam rock tribute band,
The Grimleys. It started eight years ago when I appeared
on Stars in Their Eyes as Gary Numan and lost out to Gary Barlow – the swine!
Why glam rock?
The 70s was a time of diverse music – it was high camp and high colour. This gives us the chance to dress up in lots of outfits as we cover anyone from Mick Jagger to Showaddyaddy. It’s great fun – we consider ourselves a good party band.
What is your defining track?
‘I’m Going Slightly Mad’
by Queen
Have you performed at
any Hiscox events?
No, I’m still waiting for
David Henderson to pick
up the phone!
